Sustainable Leadership Starts with Self-Care

Leadership in the charitable sector often attracts people who are deeply committed to making a difference. While that passion is a tremendous strength, it can also become a liability when leaders begin measuring themselves against impossible standards.

On a recent episode of the Cause Leadership Podcast, Dan Murray, President and CEO of Opportunity International Canada, shared an important reminder: perfection is not the goal—sustainability is.

Many nonprofit leaders struggle with feeling like they're constantly dropping the ball. They care deeply about their mission, push themselves relentlessly, and often believe they should be able to do more. Dan argues that this mindset is both unrealistic and unhealthy.

"You have to give yourself permission to not achieve perfection."

That lesson extends beyond individual leaders to organizational culture. Dan described how setting overly ambitious fundraising targets year after year created a situation where record-breaking results still felt like failure because the organization missed unrealistic budgets. By shifting to achievable growth targets, the team began celebrating consistent wins, building confidence, and creating long-term momentum.

The same philosophy applies to personal well-being.

When Dan joined his organization, he discovered several staff members hadn't taken a vacation in years. Rather than viewing constant work as a badge of honour, he encouraged his team to take their time off and made a point of modelling healthy behaviour himself. Leaders who disconnect on vacation give their teams permission to do the same.

His advice is refreshingly simple: work smart, protect your personal life, and resist the belief that success requires 60- or 70-hour workweeks.

As Dan puts it, that's often more about ego than effectiveness.

Strong leadership isn't about burning yourself out for the mission. It's about creating an environment where people can thrive, celebrate meaningful progress, and remain healthy enough to keep serving for years to come.

After all, the goal isn't just to make an impact today—it's to build the capacity to make an impact for the long run.
