Strategic Philanthropy: Aligning Values and Impact

Dave Hutchinson recently spoke with Tim Cestnick—one of Canada’s leading voices in tax and personal finance—who shares his insights on strategic philanthropy.

Tim emphasized that at its core, strategic philanthropy is about making a positive, meaningful difference in the world in a way that resonates with your family's core values. It all starts with understanding what truly matters to you—whether that’s faith, community, health, or education—and then aligning your giving with those principles.“Good philanthropy begins with clarity on your values,” Tim says. “When your donations reflect what’s important to your family, the giving becomes more authentic and impactful. It’s not just about the amount, but about the quality and focus of your contributions.”

How to Make your Giving More Meaningful:
- Define your family’s core values: Engage your family members in conversations about what matters most.
- Set clear priorities: Decide which causes or issues you want to support systematically.
- Plan your giving: Move away from ad hoc donations, especially the December scramble, and strategize year-round.

By doing so, your philanthropy becomes a reflection of who you are, creating a legacy that transcends the immediate act of giving.
