Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has helped build or renovate millions of homes worldwide, including more than 4,000 in Canada. Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North (HFHOGN) has partnered with nearly 70 local families to provide safe, affordable housing and continues to expand its impact across central and northern Ontario.
HFHOGN is a forward-thinking affiliate focused on sustainable growth and innovation. Through our Habitat ReStores, which sell donated building materials, furniture, and home goods, we generate vital funding for our mission while reducing landfill waste and supporting local communities.
Working alongside volunteers, donors, businesses, and community partners, HFHOGN serves communities across North Simcoe County, Muskoka, Parry Sound, Nipissing, Greater Sudbury, and Cochrane.
Board Director (Volunteer Role)
Overview
The Board Directors collectively oversee the governance, strategic direction, and long-term sustainability of Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North. Working alongside fellow Board members and the CEO, Directors help ensure the organization fulfills its mission while maintaining strong financial and operational stewardship.
Time Commitment
Approximately 10 hours per month, including quarterly Saturday Board meetings, committee participation, preparation time, and occasional events.
Term
Three-year term, renewable up to two additional terms.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in Board and committee meetings and decision-making
- Support strategic planning and organizational performance oversight
- Approve budgets, policies, and major governance decisions
- Contribute to CEO hiring, evaluation, and succession planning
- Uphold bylaws, governance policies, and ethical standards
- Act as an ambassador for Habitat within the community
- Support Board recruitment, diversity, and continuous improvement
- Attend the Annual General Meeting

Board Secretary (Volunteer Role)
Overview
The Board Secretary is a voting Officer of the Board of Directors and plays a key role in supporting strong governance, accurate record-keeping, and effective Board operations. Working closely with the Board Chair and CEO, the Secretary helps ensure Board decisions, policies, and proceedings are properly documented and communicated.
Time Commitment
Approximately 12–15 hours per month, including Board meetings (minimum four annually), committee participation, document preparation, and occasional events.
Term
Three-year Board term, renewable up to three terms. The Secretary position is elected annually by the Board
Key Responsibilities
Governance & Board Support
- Record, maintain, and distribute accurate Board and Executive Committee meeting minutes
- Prepare and circulate meeting agendas and materials in collaboration with the CEO
- Maintain official governance records (by-laws, policies, minutes, resolutions)
- Track attendance, motions, votes, and action items
- Confirm quorum and document formal decisions
- Support Board evaluations, onboarding, and annual governance declarations
- Ensure proper document archiving and compliance with governance standards
- Serve as a member of the Governance Committee
Board Member Duties
- Participate in strategic planning and mission oversight
- Support budget approval and financial monitoring
- Contribute to CEO hiring, evaluation, and succession planning
- Uphold Board policies, code of conduct, and conflict of interest standards
- Attend the Annual General Meeting
- Act as an ambassador for Habitat within the community
Ideal Skills & Experience
- Strong organizational and documentation skills

- Familiarity with governance practices or board environments (preferred)

This is a remote volunteer opportunity. The nature of work is high-level and often fast-paced with frequent short-term deadlines. Critical or unusual situations occur regularly. A high level of adaptability and agility is required. Travel to various locations is necessary from time to time.
